LAHORE: Former Punjab governor and Tehreek-e-Insaf leader, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, was arrested by anti-corruption officials during the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
The arrest was made from Cheema’s residence, on charges of misusing his powers as governor and giving his sister a share by forging the family registration certificate.
The arrest was made amid reports of a countrywide crackdown against PTI workers and leaders from Balochistan to Punjab. More than 100 workers and supporters are reported to have been arrested since PTI Chairman Imran Khan was taken into custody by Rangers from the Islamabad High Court premises.
According to Cheema’s family, ‘unknown’ men in plain clothes took him into custody without informing them of the charges against him. This has led to protests across Pakistan, with many supporters of the PTI claiming that Cheema’s arrest is politically motivated.
