The novel coronavirus has claimed lives of more than 30,000 people in Europe alone, in what the head of the United Nations has described as humanity’s worst crisis since World War II.
According to the provided details, Italy and Spain remained the worst affected countries in the world from the deadly pandemic.
The grim tally hit another milestone even though half of the Earth’s population is already under some form of lockdown in order to contain the outbreak of coronavirus.
For UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the extraordinary upheaval spurred by the virus presents a real danger to the relative peace the world has seen over the last few decades.
He said, “Coronavirus represents a threat to everybody in the world and an economic impact that will bring a recession that probably has no parallel in the recent past.”
“The combination of the two facts and the risk that it contributes to enhanced instability, enhanced unrest, and enhanced conflict are things that make us believe that this is the most challenging crisis we have faced since the Second World War.”
In the last 24 hours. Spain reported a record of 864 deaths pushing the country’s number of fatalities past 9,000. The toll is only surpassed by Italy’s, where the virus has killed more than 13,000 people.
United Kingdom reported its biggest daily jump in the number of deaths, taking the country’s death to 2,352 people. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Minister are also affected by the virus.
It first emerged in China in December and now has spread across the globe, claiming lives of more than 47,000 people and infecting more than 930,000 people.
