BRUSSELS: The European Union (EU) has added Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to its sanctions list following the invasion of Ukraine.
EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels agreed to impose sanctions on Russian leaders, with two EU officials saying on condition of anonymity that Germany and Italy had added Putin and Sergei Lavrov to the EU sanctions list.
According to international media, the Russian president also informed the Belarusian leadership about the talks in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, but the Ukrainian leadership disagreed on the venue of the talks.
The Ukrainian leadership suggested that Russia hold talks in the Polish capital, Warsaw, to end the Ukraine crisis, after which the two countries lost contact.
It is to be noted that Russia is one of the world’s biggest energy producers, and both it and Ukraine are among the top exporters of grain. Oil and grain prices have soared. Share markets around the world plunged at the news of the outbreak of war but rebounded on Friday.
