Electricity prices across Pakistan, including in Karachi, could face an increase due to the quarterly adjustment. This proposed hike, if approved, would result in an additional financial burden on electricity consumers across the country.
The estimated increase could amount to Rs. 8.72 billion, which will be added to the electricity bills of consumers. This amount represents the extra charges that would be collected as part of the adjustment, further affecting the affordability of electricity for households and businesses.
The request for this adjustment has been submitted for the first quarter of the current fiscal year. This request outlines the intention to collect these additional charges from consumers, increasing the cost of electricity for many in the coming months.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to hear this request on Wednesday (tomorrow). The outcome of this hearing will determine whether the proposed price adjustments are implemented and the exact financial impact on consumers.
NEPRA’s proposal includes specific charges: Rs. 8.06 billion for capacity charges, Rs. 1.25 billion for operations and maintenance, and Rs. 1.65 billion for system charges and market operations fees. Currently, consumers are paying an extra Rs. 1.74 per unit as part of the ongoing quarterly adjustment.
In addition to the potential new charges, the collection of the previous quarter’s adjustment from the last fiscal year is still underway. This process is expected to conclude by the end of this month, adding further financial implications for consumers across the nation.
