GUJRANWALA: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Parvaiz Elahi was arrested again on Saturday just a few minutes after a Gujranwala court discharged him in two corruption cases.
The PTI leader has now been detained twice by the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) following court orders to release him.
The PTI President was cleared in two corruption complaints filed against him in Gujranwala’s anti-corruption police station for allegedly accepting kickbacks during the construction of roads in Gujrat minutes before he was arrested by a local court.
This time, the PTI leader has been re-arrested in a case registered against him for the alleged illegal recruitment he did in the Punjab Assembly when he was the speaker.
A day earlier, the PTI leader was arrested in a similar fashion outside a Lahore court.
The court had ordered release of the PTI leader in connection with a case involving Rs70 million in corruption in development funds allocated for the Gujrat district.
But, minutes later he was re-arrested in a corruption case registered against him in Gujranwala by Punjab ACE.
After the arrest, the PTI leader was brought to ACE’s regional office in Gujranwala this morning and presented before Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Afzal.
Earlier, Ghulam Murtaza Virk, Judicial Magistrate at an anti-corruption court in Lahore, ordered his release as he announced the reserved verdict on a plea seeking Elahi’s physical remand.
“Parvez Elahi should be released if he is not wanted in any other case,” the verdict said.
However, the PTI leader was re-arrested by law enforcement authorities upon release in a corruption case registered against him in Gujranwala.
Parvez was first arrested on Thursday in Lahore after police raided his Lahore residence twice after an anti-corruption court dismissed his pre-arrest bail in a case pertaining to irregularities in development projects launched during his term as the Punjab chief minister.
