ISLAMABAD: At least eight people were killed, up to 290 were hurt, and more than 1,900 angry protestors were apprehended in ongoing clashes with law enforcement on Wednesday around the country following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
As the brutal protests sparked by the PTI chairman’s detention began their second day, multiple government facilities, including police stations, were damaged as a result of fights between police and PTI supporters.
Late in night, PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry was arrested hours after central Secretary General Asad Umar taken into custody.
In Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad, the administration dispatched the military in an effort to manage the deteriorating situation. A day after demonstrators broke into the corps commander’s Lahore home and tore down a gate at GHQ in Rawalpindi, the deployment took place.
The Islamabad police registered a number of cases against PTI supporters and detained more than 200 party supporters in the federal capital. In Rawalpindi, the police booked more than 1,500 PTI supporters and detained over 190 workers – 52 were sent to Adiala Jail after they were produced in an anti-terrorism court.
Meanwhile, the Lahore police have registered seven cases (four of them under anti-terrorism act) on murder, robbery, attack on police and dozens of other charges against PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Murad Saeed, Ali Ameen Gandapur and other top leadership of the party.
A case was lodged against them with Sarwar Road police station under ATA and 20 other heinous offences for attacking the Jinnah House (the Corps Commander House) in Lahore Cantt, looting valuables worth over Rs150 million and setting it on fire.
