In Karachi, during the coldest days of the year, the past week has seen an increase of 13 rupees in the price of a dozen eggs. The current price of an egg in the city has now reached up to 40 rupees.
Food vendors attribute this situation to the rising costs of chicken feed and high wholesale egg prices.
The price of eggs in Karachi is now around 400 rupees per dozen, compared to a few months ago when it was in the range of 280-300 rupees. Food vendors claim that they are buying eggs from wholesalers at higher prices, blaming it on the increased costs of feed.
Following the price hike, a large number of families are now purchasing eggs in limited quantities, as opposed to dozens.
The cost of affordable egg and paratha breakfasts in local restaurants has also increased, making it unaffordable for many people.
