ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has approved a petition of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) seeking an early hearing into the video scandal of Yousuf Raza Gilani’s son.
According to sources, the ECP would be hearing the PTI pleas on Tuesday (tomorrow). Earlier, a video of Ali Haider Gillani, son of former prime minister and Senate candidate Yousuf Raza Gillani had surfaced which exposed the PPP leader “buying vote” for upcoming upper house polls.
The video shows Ali Haider Musa Gillani asking the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA to “sell his vote”. Ali Haider Gillani was also telling the PTI lawmaker how to waste his Senate vote.
Sources said that the video of Ali Musa Gilani buying votes was made earlier a week of the elections. It should be noted that Yousuf Raza Gilani is the joint candidate of PDM in the National Assembly.
The government immediately cried foul, demanding that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declare Gilani ineligible after the emergence of the video that it said showed “votes being bought.
On March 2, The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had taken notice of the video of PPP leader Ali Haider Gilani and assured that it will be probed on merit.
A spokesman for the Election Commission said that Ali Haider Gilani’s video would be scrutinized and it would be investigated on merit.
Later, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) had filed another petition in the ECP urging it not to issue the notification on Yousaf Raza Gillani’s victory in the Senate election.
PTI lawmakers, Maleeka Bokhari and Farrukh Habib have submitted a petition in the election commission seeking an urgent hearing of PTI’s plea over the matter. Former prime minister Gillani was elected on a general seat from Islamabad in the recently held Senate elections.
“The matter is extremely important as a senator elected with corrupt practices now aspiring to become chairman of the Senate,” the petition read.
The petitioners pleaded to the election commission to fix the hearing of the petition on March 11. “It is a matter of utmost importance, which will bring long-lasting consequences,” PTI members said in their petition.
