ISLAMABAD: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake jolted Islamabad, Rawalpindi and several other cities of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday.
The earthquake was also felt in Peshawar, Landi Kotal, Ali Pur, Chiniot, Hafizabad, and adjoining areas. No loss of live or property has been reported. The tremors were also felt in Kalabagh, Shangla, Chilas, Gilgit, Skardu, Ghizer Lower Dir, Bajaur, Malakand, Nowshera, North Waziristan, Malakand, Swat, and Mansehra.
The earthquake was felt as far away as Multan, Toba Tek Singh, Mianwali, Hangu, Hunza, and Mohmand. The tremors were also felt in various parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and across the border in Indian-held Kashmir. According to reports, the earthquake tremors were also felt in the Afghan capital Kabul and several parts of India.
According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, the earthquake struck at 04:016:09 am on Saturday, Feb 5 and the epicentre was in the Hindukush region bordering Afghanistan. The magnitude was 5.9 on the Richter Scale at a depth of 210 km. (Latitude: 35.63 N, Longitude: 71.10 E).
On January 14, an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale had jolted Islamabad and northern areas of the country. Earlier in the month, an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale had struck Pakistan’s northern areas on Jan 1. No casualty or damage was reported in the two quakes.
