A glitch in Google’s currency converter displayed an incorrect exchange rate for the Pakistani rupee (PKR), showing it at Rs 152.62 instead of the actual rate of Rs 277 per US dollar (USD). This error persisted for nearly 30 minutes on the first trading day of November, leading to confusion among netizens checking USD to PKR rates.
After some time, Google corrected the rate, reverting to the accurate value of Rs 277 per dollar. The cause of the glitch remains unknown. Notably, this isn’t the first instance of Google’s currency converter displaying incorrect rates; a similar issue occurred on July 28, 2022, when the dollar was shown at Rs 207 instead of Rs 240.
The latest error was more significant, with a discrepancy of Rs 125 lower than the actual rate provided by Pakistan’s central bank. Many users were surprised by the sudden drop in the dollar’s value and took to social media to voice their confusion.
Interestingly, even now, if users search “USD to PKR rate” on Google, the graph in the currency converter still shows the dollar at Rs 152 for a brief period on Friday at 5:30 PM. This unresolved issue could lead to further misunderstandings for those relying on Google for accurate exchange rates, as they might mistakenly believe the PKR had appreciated significantly.
In contrast, the State Bank of Pakistan has released official exchange rates indicating that the PKR closed at Rs 277.50 against the USD, reflecting a slight gain of 0.05%.
