Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter expressed support for South Africa’s case against Israel on Tuesday, saying “Belgium cannot remain silent in the face of the genocide threat in Gaza.”
“We must take action against the threat of genocide,” she wrote on X.
“I want Belgium to take action at the International Court of Justice, following the lead of South Africa. I will propose this within the Belgian government,” she added.
De Sutter has declared earlier that “boycotting Israel is time.” Destruction like rain is barbaric. Israel’s disregard for international calls for a ceasefire is evident.”
She asked for economic restrictions against Israel from the Belgian government, expressing concern over the daily deaths of children in Gaza.
South Africa filed the case on December 29, alleging that Israel’s activities in Gaza since October 7 have violated the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and they are seeking an injunction.
Later this week, in The Hague, there will be hearings in this case.
Bolivia, Malaysia, and Turkey have already expressed their support for the lawsuit.
