KARACHI: The Sindh government today (Thursday) decided to maintain the current restrictions in the province amid a surge in the COVID-19 infections witnessed after Eid-ul-Fitr.
The decision was taken in a meeting of the provincial task force on coronavirus led my Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. Provincial ministers, chief secretary Sindh, IG police, additional chief secretary, commissioner, additional IG, and Core V Rangers attended the meeting.
The chief minister expressed alarm at the increase in COVID-19 cases, saying, “A record 20,421 coronavirus tests were conducted yesterday out of which 9,000 were in Karachi,” adding that 2,076 cases had been confirmed positive, which meant a positivity rate of 10.2 percent.
The positivity rate for Karachi stood at 16.82pc. CM Sindh further said that 1,232 cases had been recorded in the province on May 13. “After Eid on May 19, there were 2,076 cases which is a positivity of 10.2pc,” he added.
In this regard, the other members and experts in the task force advised the chief minister to continue the current restrictions in place. They further advised him to take even stricter decisions if required.
CM Murad asked the attendees of the meeting to advise further measures in view of the situation. The taskforce also decided to convene another meeting on Saturday to review the situation and decide further steps.
Earlier today (Thursday), it was reported that the pandemic claimed 19 more lives in Sindh and caused 3,000 fresh infections. Almost 2,076 new cases were diagnosed when 20,421 samples were tested for the contagion.
