BRASILIA: Argentine footballer Lionel Messi has donated one million euros to Barcelona’s hospital to help for the coronavirus patients in Spain.
“Thank you Leo, for your support and commitment,” the hospital added in a tweet. The money was transferred to the Medical College of Barcelona to buy “medical equipment that is currently lacking in health centres in Catalonia.
The donation of Messi will also be used to produce ventilators to treat patients and protective gear for health care workers in Guardiola’s northeastern region of Spain.
Spain has been one of the worst-hit countries by the coronavirus in terms of numbers of deaths with the latest toll standing at 2,696, and the total number of infections nearing 40,000.
Lionel Messi had last year won a record sixth men’s Ballon d’Or award at a ceremony in Paris. It is Messi’s first Ballon d’Or since 2015 and his sixth overall as he moves one ahead of his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who finished third in the voting.
