Coronavirus’ impact on education; is promoting students an only solution?

Arooj Bhatti by Arooj Bhatti
March 24, 2022
Preparation of students for ninth and eleventh class examinations in Punjab is not complete and students are suffering from severe mental distress due to repeated closure of educational institutions by the government.

For the past year and a half, the coronavirus has been affecting education in Pakistan. Government and private schools, colleges, and universities in Punjab have also been restored after the holidays.

However, on social media, students are once again demanding their promotion to classes without exams from Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood.

Covid’s situation in Pakistan

Despite the government’s extreme efforts, the corona epidemic in the country has not been brought under control yet due to the increasing cases of the virus in the country. The federation has decided to close the market from August 3 at 8 pm on a strictly scheduled basis.

Indoor dining will be closed and outdoor dining will be open until 10 pm, takeaway and home delivery will be allowed 24 hours a day. Not more than 400 people will be invited to weddings and the same will apply to all gatherings. Only people who are vaccinated will be allowed to attend weddings, and the number of passengers on public transport and office workers will be diminished to 50 percent. The bans will apply from August 3 to August 31.

NCOC

Asad Umar, Federal Minister, and Head of National Command and Operations Center, in this regard, said that the number of coronavirus patients in hospitals is increasing. Coronavirus is spreading rapidly in the country so new sanctions have been decided, some decisions have been taken after the approval of the Prime Minister. Asad Umar said that in view of the coronavirus’ situation, it has been decided that all markets two days a week will remain closed, but it will be up to the provincial government to decide in which two days they will shutdown business activities.

The cities to which the ban will apply to include Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Faisalabad in Punjab, Peshawar, and Abbottabad in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi, and Hyderabad in Sindh till the 8th August. If the rate remains the same, these restrictions will remain in force in Karachi and Hyderabad even after the 8th of this month. Along with Islamabad, these restrictions will also apply in Mirpur in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit and Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Loss of education

While education is being harmed due to the government’s measures, students and parents are also suffering from severe mental anguish. And if the epidemic in children is strong during the exams, who will be responsible for it?

The first case of the corona virus came to light in Pakistan in March 2020, it was decided to close the first educational institutions and so far the all academic institutions in the country have not been fully restored and other provinces have decided to close educational institutions again.

Student demand

Preparation of students for ninth and eleventh class examinations in Punjab is not complete and students are suffering from severe mental distress due to repeated closure of educational institutions by the government. In view of all the restrictions and lockdowns, it can only be said that there is no provision for education in Pakistan.

The online education system has already failed, while repeated blockades have left students heartbroken and students are demanding promotion from Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood. The country’s education system has already been destroyed by the coronavirus.

Solution of problem

When the number of corona cases decreases, educational institutions are opened, then a new wave of corona comes, and then educational institutions are closed. Following the guidelines for the prevention of coronavirus is a common practice around the world, but it is openly flouted in Pakistan. “We have received complaints that some educational institutions are completely open,” Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said.

In case of violation of law, the institutions will be sealed. In view of the situation, it is the responsibility of the government to take all the concerned institutions into confidence before resuming education and if there are any concerns about coronavirus, to protect human lives.

Instead of resuming education, wait and if it is intended to restore education, first all security arrangements should be ensured and students should be given some time away from education instead of forcing them to take urgent examinations throughout the year.
