The construction work for Pakistan’s first double-story underpass has commenced in Lahore, with Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi inaugurating the project near Barkat Market in Garden Town.
The underpass has been named ‘Rustam e Zaman the Great Gamma Crossing’ as a tribute to the national hero and world champion, Gamma Pehlawan.
During the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Naqvi highlighted that this double-story underpass would be the first of its kind in Pakistan. The project aims to honor the legacy of Gamma Pehlawan and provide a solution to traffic congestion. The level 1 underpass, stretching 700 meters, will connect Barkat Market to Canal Road. Simultaneously, the level 2 underpass, extending 1.4 km, will run from Jinnah Hospital to Barkat Market. U-turns are planned at Bhekewal Mor and Canal Road to enhance traffic flow.
The construction initiative, undertaken by the CBD team of Punjab, marks the first time dual underpasses are being built concurrently. Completion of this project is expected to alleviate traffic issues in the region significantly.
Chief Minister Naqvi expressed optimism about the project’s timely completion, stating that the projected six-month timeline may be shortened to 3-4 months. He emphasized the benefits for commuters heading towards Barkat Market, Canal Road, Jinnah Hospital, and Iqbal Town. The design for the underpass project has been prepared by Nespak.
Naqvi underscored that the completion of this mega project would result in savings in both time and fuel, enhancing the overall convenience for the public.
