A Dublin woman has been awarded substantial damages after a High Court jury found in her favor in a civil case against Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor.
The woman had accused McGregor of brutally raping and battering her in a Dublin hotel penthouse in December 2018.
McGregor, who denied the allegations, claimed that the sex was consensual. However, the jury rejected his version of events and found him liable for the woman’s injuries.
The woman, who broke down several times during her testimony, described how she was left with extensive bruises and abrasions, as well as serious physical and psychological injuries.
She was also diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The jury awarded the woman €248,603.60 (£206,637) in damages. McGregor has announced plans to appeal the verdict.
The woman’s lawyer told the court that she had suffered significantly as a result of the alleged assault, including being unable to work due to her mental health. Her mortgage was also in arrears, and she had spent over €4,000 on medical and therapy expenses.
The woman stated that she felt vindicated by the verdict and hoped that her story would encourage others to speak out against abuse.
“I hope my story is a reminder that no matter how afraid you might be, speak up, you have a voice, and keep on fighting for justice,” she said.
McGregor’s friend, James Lawrence, was also accused of raping the woman, but the jury found him not liable.
