On the directive of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the Punjab jails’ menu has been upgraded to enhance the quality of food provided to inmates. The new menu, which was announced on Friday, includes a variety of dishes such as chicken korma, karahi, and pulao, aiming to improve the dietary standards for prisoners.
Inspector General (IG) Jails Mian Farooq Nazir explained that chicken will now be served seven times a week in Punjab’s jails, up from the previous six times. The menu adjustments are part of a broader effort to ensure that each prisoner receives a daily intake of 2,800 to 3,000 calories.
In addition to the increased frequency of chicken dishes, the revised menu also focuses on improving the nutritional quality of the meals. To enhance the flavor and consistency of curry gravies, the new menu increases the proportion of onions, ginger, and tomatoes by 25 percent. Additionally, Kasuri fenugreek has been introduced to further enrich the taste of the dishes.
Mian Farooq Nazir emphasized that these changes were made based on expert consultations to ensure that the food meets nutritional standards while being palatable. The decision to update the menu reflects a commitment to improving the overall well-being of inmates through better dietary provisions.
