Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar’s resignation was received by Governor Punjab Chaudhry Sarwar on Wednesday and it is likely to be accepted tomorrow (Thursday).
According to media reports, the resignation of the Punjab Chief Minister is likely to be accepted tomorrow. After accepting the resignation, the governor will inform the Punjab Assembly Secretariat in this regard.
After that, a meeting of the Assembly will be convened and an election schedule for the election of the new Chief Minister will be issued.
It may be recalled that Prime Minister Imran Khan had taken resignation from the CM on Monday nominating Chaudhry Pervez Elahi for the chief ministership.
On Monday, PML-Q had finally put its weight behind the embattled prime minister in exchange for PM Imran conceding Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as PTI’s candidate for Punjab chief minister after incumbent Usman Buzdar presented his resignation to the premier.
The PML-Q is also a critical ally of the PTI government in Punjab and Centre, with 10 and five seats, respectively. Chaudhrys’ support for PM Imran was being seen as a revival of his hopes to save his government.
But in a new development on Wednesday, a disgruntled faction of PTI’s Aleem Khan group refused to support Pervaiz Elahi for the Punjab Chief Minister slot.
Disgruntled group’s spokesperson, Khalid Mahmood, said that for four long years a “dishonest and incompetent” person was forced upon Punjab – an apparent reference to Usman Buzdar and now Pervez Elahi had been nominated.
“Every committed worker of the PTI objects to Elahi’s nomination,” he said. The spokesperson said if Pervaiz Elahi was to bring about a Naya (new) Pakistan, how do you justify the existence of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
The spokesperson further said that the Aleem Khan group would support the opposition candidate unconditionally.
