ISLAMABAD: Senior-most diplomat of the Foreign Office Dr Asad Majeed Khan, who attained fame in the cipher saga, has been appointed as Foreign Secretary.

Dr Asad Majeed Khan was earlier posted in Brussels to continue as Pakistan’s ambassador for Belgium and the European Union (EU). He had come to the headquarters early in October this year after being tipped to be the new foreign secretary but was sent to Brussels till his superannuation.
Before taking up his assignment in Brussels, he was the ambassador in the United States where the cipher issue generated a huge controversy during his last days in Washington. He was ambassador for Japan before moving to the United States.
Dr Asad Majeed Khan is also reported to have reiterated his stance, in second meeting of the National Security Council, towards content of cipher and the mode of communication chosen by US officials during his meeting in Washington.

After his firm stand on cipher, a section of media, believed to be closer to the ruling PDM coalition, had also declared Dr Asad Majeed Khan as “architect of cypher conspiracy” during series of attempt to discredit him and term the entire saga of ‘cipher’ as ill-devised conspiracy of them PM Imran Khan.
