As the government continues to claim progress in reducing inflation, the prices of essential items continue to rise sharply. On Sunday, chicken meat prices saw an almost 100% increase across the country, leaving consumers struggling to cope with the escalating costs.
In the federal capital, Islamabad, chicken prices surged by Rs430 per kilogram compared to the previous week. The cost of chicken meat increased from Rs450 to Rs880 per kg, while live chicken prices jumped from Rs285 to Rs460 per kg. Desi chicken, known for its higher quality, was being sold for Rs900 per kilogram.
In Lahore, the capital of Punjab, the price of broiler chicken meat surpassed Rs700, with reports indicating that it was being sold as high as Rs730 in Tollinton Market, despite the government’s official price list setting it at Rs595 per kg.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also feeling the impact of rising poultry prices. In Peshawar, the price of chicken increased by Rs70 in just one week. While the price increase was lower than in Islamabad and Lahore, it still reached Rs510 per kg, up from Rs440 the previous week, according to official price listings.
This surge in chicken prices highlights the ongoing challenges faced by consumers, particularly those relying on affordable sources of protein. Despite government assurances on inflation control, the rise in the cost of essential goods like chicken continues to place significant pressure on household budgets across the country.
