ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Captain (R) Safdar on Saturday filed a contempt of court petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan over his recent remarks on the acquittals of the Sharif family in various cases.
The PPP leader earlier this week alleged that General Bajwa and the establishment helped the Sharif family clear the cases of corruption against them.
The petition stated that the PPP leader criticized the judiciary after courts acquitted Sharif family in different cases.
Safdar has made the state, through the Advocate-General for Pakistan, and IHC’s registrar as respondents in the contempt of court plea.
The applicant has pleaded with the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against veteran politician and senior lawyer and punish him according to the law.
The PML-N leader claimed that Ahsan “defamed” him through his statement, and his acquittal had been tainted, and his “respect in the eyes of the general public has been diminished owing to spurious claims.”
The petition stated that the PPP leader’s remarks also contravene Article 2-A of the Pakistani Constitution. Safdar also urged that the court summon Ahsan and punish him, including imprisoning him, in order to maintain the confidence of the public in the court.
Aside from asserting that the establishment supported the PML-N leaders, the PPP representative claimed that that the cases against PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Maryam were open-and-shut and their conviction was evident.
The top leadership of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has distanced itself from the recent statement of Ahsan, saying that it was his personal view and does not reflect the party policy.
