ISLAMABAD: 6 members of the Senate will be elected today on the seats vacated by the senators who moved to the National Assembly after winning the general elections on February 8.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, polling will be held in the National Assembly as well as Sindh and Balochistan Assemblies. Polling will start at 8 am and continue till 4 pm. Islamabad Returning Officer Zafar Iqbal has already issued Form 54 containing the names of the candidates.
ECP has already sent ballot papers and other polling materials to the provincial assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan. In addition to one reserved seat in Islamabad and two general seats in Sindh, there will be polling on three general seats to represent Balochistan.
Syed Yusuf Raza Geelani and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Hydari who have joined the National Assembly after their success in the recent general elections are also among those who vacated their seats.
Similarly, Nisar Ahmad Khoro and Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar were elected members of the Sindh Assembly, while Prince Ahmed Umar Ahmad Zai and Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti were elected members of the Balochistan Assembly.
Seven candidates are competing for three seats in Balochistan. Former Chief Minister Abdul Qudous Bizenjo is the candidate of PPP while Mir Dostin Domki is the candidate of Muslim League-N. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam has issued tickets to Abdul Shakoor while BAP has issued tickets to Kahda Babar and Mubeen Khalji.
Syed Mehmood Shah and Mir Heer Beyar are participating in the Senate election as independents.
Pakistan People’s Party’s Yousuf Raza Gilani and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Chaudhry Ilyas Mehrban are competing for the seat of the federal capital.
