PESHAWAR: Body-shrouding ‘shuttlecock’ burqas were distributed among female students at Girls Middle School in Union Council Palo Dheri of district Rustam in Mardan.
The garments were reportedly bought from Rs 100,000 fund by former district councillor Muzaffar Shah. Around Sixty-nine burqas were distributed among the students on Friday.
Local Pakistan Tehreek-e-Isaf (PTI) leader Muzaffar Shah had provided fund for the distribution of the burqas costing around Rs1000 each.
He said funds were approved for free of cost uniform and other needs of students with which burqas have been made for female students of the area. He said the burqa is part of the area culture and girls wear burqas in the area.
On September 16, the Khyber Pakthunkhwa Education Department had issued a notification making it compulsory for all female students in Peshawar to wear a veil of abaya to protect themselves against harassment.
However, that notification was withdrawn on direct of KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, saying that that order was issued without permission from the provincial government.
