Pakistan is currently facing a sharp rise in online fraud, with hundreds of individuals losing their life savings within minutes to sophisticated scams.
Fraudsters are exploiting mobile networks and impersonating credible institutions such as the State Bank of Pakistan and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to deceive unsuspecting victims.
A common method involves an automated phone call featuring a female voice stating, “Assalamu Alaikum, this is from PTA.” The message falsely claims that a complaint has been filed against your mobile number and warns that all SIM cards registered in your name will be blocked within two hours unless immediate action is taken. Victims are then instructed to press “9” to proceed.
Once connected, the scammers request personal information, including your CNIC number and bank account details, often using threats of service suspension to pressure compliance.
These calls are fraudulent and have no affiliation with the PTA or any official agency.
Authorities urge the public to immediately disconnect such calls and never disclose any personal or financial information. Incidents should be reported to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the PTA.
Citizens are strongly encouraged to stay vigilant and spread awareness to help prevent further financial losses and identity theft.
