BBC slammed for ‘biased reporting’ about Palestinian youth killing

MM News Staff by MM News Staff
December 13, 2022

BBC has come under fire for disgustingly biased coverage of Palestinian youth who was shot dead by an Israeli sniper while being on the roof of her house in Jenin.

Social media users criticized the British state media for, as one Twitter user says, their “unbelievable” coverage of the story.

Israeli soldiers killed a 16-year-old Palestinian girl in cold blood in the West Bank on Sunday. The body of Jana Zakarneh was found on the roof of her house in Jenin.

While reporting the event, BBC headlined the story “Palestinian girl shot dead on roof of West Bank home”.

Netizens immediately slammed the British media for disgusting headline and shamed them for completely ignoring the crimes of Israeli forces.

One Twitter user wrote “I was a BBC producer in Belfast 1975-82, when every word counted. This sort of “journalism” makes me cringe with shame & embarrassment. Everyone can see you saying “Palestinian girl shot…”. So who shot her? Why haven’t you said?”

This sort of “journalism” makes me cringe with shame & embarrassment.
Everyone can see you saying “Palestinian girl shot…”.
So who shot her?
Why haven’t you said? https://t.co/SOYkZf2nkt

Another said “This child was killed by an Israeli sniper – a critical detail the BBC ignores here. The report itself starts off w/ literal IDF talking points, doesn’t mention specifically how many Palestinian kids Israel has killed in 2022 & then ends on IDF’s justification for its violence.”

Another user tweeted “magically shot dead by no specific perpetrator whereas whenever an Israeli dies they were brutally murdered by Palestinian terrorists this Christmas season remember that support for Israel is support for settler colonialism, genocide, and straight faced fascism.”

this Christmas season remember that support for Israel is support for settler colonialism, genocide, and straight faced fascism. https://t.co/3n1LWBgSla

Another said “The passive voice here is unreal. “IDF forces shoot unarmed Palestinian child four times, claim it was accidental. Jana Zakarneh, who was fetching her cat, was 16 years old.”

Someone reminded BBC about the killer “She was murdered by an Israeli sniper.”

She was murdered by an Israeli sniper. https://t.co/1E0lyEpMPE

Another user said “Correction: Israeli thugs masquerading as soldiers pumped seven bullets into body of 15 yr/o Palestinian girl. RIP Jana Zakarneh????. @BBCBreaking is beyond disgusting ‼”

The BBC’s own style guide: “Where you can, write sentences with subjects that are doing things, and not subjects that are simply receiving actions upon them”

What their own style guide suggests instead of this title: Israeli forces shoot dead 16 year-old Palestinian girl https://t.co/43tSzsvwVR pic.twitter.com/VwbH7f6Psj

Any headline that does not include *who* shot someone is a headline designed to obfuscate. https://t.co/GlQ7Na6u2U

— Mic Wright (@brokenbottleboy) December 13, 2022

The occupation is structurally violent, requires random violence to enforce Israeli rule on millions of Palestinians not citizens of Israel or any state, and alas makes violent resistance near inevitable. And the whole point is forcibly taking Palestinian land. It’s an obscenity! https://t.co/wlbkmBb5Zp

— Hussein Ibish (@Ibishblog) December 13, 2022

According to B’tselem’s calculations (2021), some 2,171 Palestinian children have been killed in the last two decades by Israeli military actions.
