ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader and Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan has advised Prime Minister Imran Khan not to challenge Yousaf Raza Gilani’s victory in the Senate elections.
The prime minister has summoned an important meeting of party leaders after the federal coalition-backed candidate Hafeez Shaikh lost the Senate seat from Islamabad. The meeting will discuss matters pertaining to the Senate election and the overall political situation of the country.
He has also started consulting senior party members whether to challenge the election’s result. Legal advisers and experts have started working on various aspects. In this regard, Babar Awan held a meeting with the prime minister at the PM House which lasted for over two hours.
The meeting discussed the Senate elections and various aspects of challenging the result. Sources revealed that the prime minister is concerned over Hafeez Shaikh’s election loss and has is not willing to back out without a fight.
Babar Awan reported told the prime minister not to challenge Gilani’s victory, adding that it is unlikely to make any difference. On the other hand, the prime minister wants a recount on the Senate vote.
In another development, Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided to seek a vote of confidence from the parliament after Hafeez Shaikh lost the Senate seat from Islamabad. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi made the announcement at a press conference along with several ministers.
The federal government has also decided to convene a session of the National Assembly after the Yousuf Raza Gilani pulled off a surprise win in the Senate polls.
