ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has rejected the objections of the former PDM government’s bench in the audio leaks commission case.
The government had constituted an inquiry commission on the alleged audio leaks of Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial’s Khush Daman, wife of Khawaja Tariq Rahim, son of former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Mazahir Naqvi, Abid Zuberi and Pervaiz Elahi.
Hearing of Jaranwala church burning case to be held in SC today
The government had formed this commission of inquiry headed by Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, which included Chief Justices of Islamabad and Balochistan High Courts, to investigate the 9 alleged audio leaks.
A 5-member bench was formed under the chairmanship of Justice, Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Hasan Azhar, and Justice Shahid Waheed were included in this bench.
The bench heard the case twice and stopped the Audio Leaks Inquiry Commission from functioning.
However, the previous government had filed a separate application for the separation of three judges from the bench due to a conflict of interest.
The three judges who were included in the bench by the government were Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandial, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan, and Justice Muneeb Akhtar.
The court had reserved its judgment on June 6 after hearing the government’s objection petition on the bench, which was pronounced by Justice Ejaz-ul-Ahsan on Friday, three months later.
The Supreme Court dismissed the government’s objection petition against the three judges and the court gave a short judgment terming the previous government’s objections on the bench as an attack on the independence of the judiciary.
Justice Ejaz while delivering the verdict said that objection to the judges is equivalent to attacking the court. The Supreme Court will issue a detailed decision on the case later.
