ISLAMABAD: The Attorney General of Pakistan, Ashtar Ausaf, has resigned from his post citing personal reasons.
Media reports suggested that Ashtar Ausaf had sent his resignation to the Prime Minister, but was advised to continue his job until the government finds an appropriate replacement.
The news of his resignation came moments before the start of a crucial meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, which was set to consider permanent appointment of 13 Lahore High Court judges.

Informed sources said AGP Ashtar Ausaf Ali tried to tender his resignation at least twice in the past, but PM had asked him to continue his work until his replacement is found out. Sources said Govt seemed to be interested to fill the slot from some Lahore-based lawyer.
It may be recalled that Ashtar Ausaf was appointed as the Attorney General of Pakistan in May this year when the post fell vacant after Khalid Javed Khan resigned on April 9.
It may also be recalled here that during PMLN’s tenure, Ashtar Ausaf Ali had served as special assistant to the prime minister (SAPM) on law and justice during 2015-16. He had been the AGP during the tenure of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
