Youm-e-Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, will be observed on Sunday, July 6, 2025, as the Islamic year 1447 AH began last Friday (June 27).
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is observed worldwide as a period of mourning to commemorate the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. Among those martyred in this historic event were Imam Husain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), and other members of his family.
Will Friday be added to the weekend holiday for Ashura-e-Muharram?
The government usually declares public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram to honor this occasion. However, this year, the 10th of Muharram falls on a Sunday, which is already a weekly off in Pakistan. As a result, there is speculation that the government may announce a holiday on Friday, July 4, to compensate for the lost day. If granted, this would provide a three-day weekend for citizens to observe this solemn religious events.
However, an official notification will clarify the situation.
Meanwhile, the Sindh government imposed a ban on pillion riding on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, invoking Section 144 of the CrPC, as part of security measures to ensure uninterrupted observance of Ashura-related activities.
Moreover, the federal government has approved the deployment of armed forces across the country to maintain security during the holy month of Muharram.
