Singer Arooj Aftab became the first Pakistani to perform at Coachella Music Festival, which returned this year after a two-year pandemic-induced hiatus
Earlier this month, Arooj Aftab scored her first Grammy, winning a prestigious trophy for her song Mohabbat in the Best Global Performance category. The 37-year-old, who has lived in the US city of New York for some 15 years, has been steadily gaining global attention for her work that fuses ancient Sufi traditions with folk, jazz and minimalism.
Taking to her Instagram, the ‘Mohabbat’ singer shared snippets from her performance, writing in the caption of a post, “Epic epic epic weekend 1 at Coachella. See you in LA at The Roxy this Monday and again at Coachella for weekend 2.”

The singer wore an edgy look, wearing a spikey structured black top and matching black pants. Aftab kept her hair up for the performance, adding a pair of sunglasses into the mix to pull the outfit together. Off-stage look, the singer kept things casual in a black T-shirt and jeans with a longline collared shirt.

Harry Styles debuted at Coachella as a headliner, kicking off the night’s premiere set. He later delighted fans by bringing none other than Shania Twain on stage for a string of duets, telling the audience he used to sing along with the nineties-era superstar’s hits in his mom’s car.
Born to Pakistani parents in Saudi Arabia, Aftab spent her teenage years in Lahore before relocating to Boston’s prestigious Berklee School of Music to study music production and engineering.
She released her third studio album, Vulture Prince, to critical acclaim, and gained even more attention after former US President Barack Obama included the track Mohabbat on his 2021 summer favourites list.
The Brooklyn-based singer has performed at a number of major New York venues including the Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art, also opening for Mitski at The Brooklyn Steel in 2018.
