The federal government of Pakistan on Tuesday promoted Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to the rank of field marshal.
According to the official statement, the Government of Pakistan has approved the promotion of General Syed Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Military) to the rank of Field Marshal in recognition of his role in ensuring national security and defeating the enemy through high-level strategic planning and courageous leadership during the Battle of Haq and Operation Banyan Marsus.
The decision was made during a meeting of the federal cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, where several important matters were discussed. The Prime Minister congratulated the nation on the successful execution of Operation Banyan Marsus and the thwarting of hostile intentions during the Battle of Haq.
During the cabinet meeting, it was observed that Pakistan had recently endured a particularly challenging period in its history. The federal cabinet stated that on the night of May 6–7, 2025, India launched an unprovoked and unjustified war against Pakistan, targeting innocent civilians, including women and children.
The cabinet further noted that the enemy attempted a blatant violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. General Syed Asim Munir, as Chief of Army Staff, led the Pakistan Army with exemplary resolve, coordinating a comprehensive war strategy and mobilizing the armed forces effectively.
The cabinet affirmed that under the exceptional leadership of the Army Chief, Pakistan secured a historic victory. Prime Minister Sharif also met with President Asif Ali Zardari to take him into confidence regarding the promotion. Additionally, the government unanimously decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu upon completion of his current term.
