KARACHI: Four robbers have snatched a bike from two police officers at gunpoint within the limits of Sir Syed Police Station in the metropolis.
In a CCTV footage circulating on social media, two armed robbers could be seen standing in front of a bike, seemingly asking the officers to move away from the vehicle.
Next, they could be seen getting on the bike and speeding away, while the other two suspects could be seen riding away on their own bike. Despite having weapons the police officials failed to take any action against the criminals.
Citing the incident a police official said the two cops, Imran and Arsalan were stationed at Sir Syed Police Station.
The police official said the incident took place when the cops offered resistance during a robbery bid. The suspects managed to escape after committing the crime. A case has been registered while investigations are underway, police added.
According to a report issued by the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), more than 9,000 mobile phones were stolen at gunpoint between January and July 2020 in the city, compared to 8,517 phones last year.
The report stated 9,224 mobile phones were stolen in Karachi in the last seven months whereas 8,517 were stolen during the same period in 2019.
Two incidences of extortion and as many as three bank robberies were reported during the year. Approximately 1,026 motorcycles were stolen while the number of cars stolen/snatched amounted to 763 during the last six months.
The data further showed that Rangers were targeted in two separate incidents on June 10 in Gulistan-e-Johar and Quaidabad, while police officers were killed on July 3 and 11 in the city’s Manzoor Colony and Korangi.
