Android 16 is already here.
Google has unveiled the first preview of its newest mobile operating system, with much of the buzz centered on uncovering its new features. This comes unexpectedly, as Android 15 was released just last month.
The company has confirmed that Android 16 will officially launch in the second quarter of next year (April to June), followed by a smaller update in the fourth quarter (October to December), likely branded as Android 16.1, 16.5, or something similar.
What is new in Android 16?
Though this is only the initial developer preview, Android 16 introduces a range of innovative features aimed at enhancing security, usability, and functionality:
New Photo Picker
Apps can now be granted access to specific photos and videos instead of the entire gallery, giving users more privacy and control over sharing.
Medical Record Integration
With user consent, apps can read and write medical records, unlocking new possibilities for personalized healthcare services.
Stronger Privacy Controls
Google reinforces its commitment to security by imposing stricter rules on how apps access and share user data.
As with all developer previews, this version is designed for app developers to test and optimize their applications. However, general users can get involved once the first beta version is released by enrolling their Pixel devices in the Android Beta program.
