KARACHI: Actor Adnan Siddiqui has reacted to an insensitive statement made by TV personality Aamir Liaquat Hussain about the death of Bollywood star Irrfan Khan.
Adnan Siddiqui appeared as a guest on Aamir Liaquat’s Ramazan show where they spoke about different things from personal life to showbiz. However, the versatile actor was left in shock when Aamir Liaquat said that two people, Rani Mukherjee and Bipasha Basu, owe their lives to him.
Adnan Siddiqui was unsure what the host was talking about until he explained himself. “You worked in Mom and Sri Devi died, you worked with Irrfan Khan as well and he passed away,” said Amir Liaquat. “You were offered roles in Mardaani 2 and Jism 2 but you declined, so the actors of that movie owe their life to you,” he continued.
Siddiqui was taken aback by Liaquat’s comment and said that it was not something to joke about. Aamir Liaquat is no stranger to controversies and has been in the limelight for similar actions and provocative statements.
Adnan Siddiqui issued a statement to express his feelings about the incident. “The anchor Amir Liaquat sahab joked about something extremely sensitive. Not only were they both close to me but also as a human it was wrong on so many levels. I cannot call it ‘hitting below the belt'”
He said that it was an “extremely callous act to joke about the deceased” adding that it was in “bad taste”. He said the comments showed them and the entire country in bad light.
Siddiqui said he would like to apologise to the families and fans of Sri Devi and Irrfan Khan. “If you see my body language, I was extremely uncomfortable with what he said but I didn’t want to stoop to that level.”
He said that he regretted being on the show and has learned his lesson, adding he will not tolerate such acts in the future. He also expressed displeasure that the incident has become public.
