NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party’s Shelly Oberoi has been elected mayor in the Indian capital by defeating BJP candidate Rekha Gupta.
According to the details, Aam Aadmi Party’s Shelly Oberoi took the field. A session of the House was called for the fourth time for the election of the mayor, but the Indian media said that no sloganeering or protest was seen during the voting.
Indian media said that the voting process started yesterday at 11:30 am and polling continued for more than two hours. Out of 24 nominated Members of Parliament and 250 newly elected councilors of Delhi, 241 voted.
Nine elected Congress councilors boycotted the election. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced the news of Shelly Oberoi becoming the Mayor of Delhi and congratulated all the workers of the Aam Aadmi Party for becoming the Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Earlier, the results of the Delhi MCD elections came out on December 7 last year, according to which the Aam Aadmi Party won 134 seats while the ruling BJP won 104 seats, which made the defeat of the BJP clear.
It should be noted that the majority of the people, including the majority-minority Muslims, are not happy with the policies of the senior central leader of the BJP and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Analysts said that it is difficult for extremist Modi to become the prime minister in the upcoming elections.
