ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has surpassed the grim milestone of 23,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus on Sunday, while the positivity ratio has surged as the situation worsens amid the fourth wave.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 2,819 cases and 45 deaths in the previous 24-hour period. The national tally of coronavirus cases has reached 1,004,694 while the death toll stands at 23,016.
The positivity ratio has increased and was recorded at 6.32% in the previous day. There are 2,573 people in critical condition including 22 new patients yesterday. Overall 925,958 people have recovered from the virus, including 1,176 in the past day.
There were 44,579 tests conducted in the previous day leading to new cases. The number of active cases in the country has also increased to 55,720 amid the recent surge in cases.
Sindh has recorded the highest number of cases. The province has recorded 364,784 cases and 5,814 deaths while the number of active cases has surged to 36,184.
Punjab has recorded 352,682 cases and 10,939 deaths, while the number of active cases in the province has reached 10,757. Islamabad has recorded 85,519 cases and 792 deaths while there are 2,248 active cases in the federal capital.
The number of cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands at 141,627 and 4,417 deaths while Balochistan has recorded 29,494 cases and 322 deaths. Gilgit Baltistan had recorded 7,702 cases and 122 death while Azad Kashmir has recorded 22,886 cases and 610 deaths.
The Sindh government announced to re-impose coronavirus restrictions in the province starting from Monday, after the positivity ratio in the province crossed 10%.
According to a notification issued by the home department, general businesses, shopping malls, shops, and department stores will only be allowed to operate from 6AM to 6PM. However, grocery stores, milk shops, bakeries, fruit and vegetable vendors, and pharmacies are exempt from this rule.
The provincial government has placed a complete ban on all functions and gatherings including weddings held indoors or outdoors. The authorities have also banned indoor and outdoor dining at restaurants, which will only be allowed to offer takeaway till 10PM and delivery services till midnight.
