LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to impose a complete lockdown across the province from May 8 in order to restrict the spread of the coronavirus.
As per details, all types of public transport and tourist destinations across the province will remain closed from May 8. Checkpoints manned by Rangers and Police personnel will be set up at the entrances and exits of cities.
This decision to impose complete lockdown in the province was taken in a meeting held at the Civil Secretariat under the chairmanship of Provincial Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid on Wednesday.
Dr. Yasmin Rashid directed Chief Secretary Punjab and senior civil and military officials to spare no effort in controlling the spread of the virus as the next 15 to 20 days were very critical.
People should celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with simplicity and show responsibility as citizens by taking precautionary steps, she said. “The purpose of giving more holidays on the occasion of Eid is to limit the public’s movement, the minister mentioned.
Chief Secretary Punjab said that awareness about the importance of precautionary measures would be ramped up and urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during the Eid holidays.
He said that parks and tourist spots should be kept completely closed during the holidays as directed by the NCOC.
The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed 119 more lives across Pakistan during the previous 24 hours, taking the death toll from the disease to 18,429.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) data, 4,113 new infections emerged when 44,838 samples were tested during the same period. The positivity rate of new cases was recorded at 9.17%, the NCOC said.
The countrywide tally of confirmed cases currently stands at 841,636 with the addition of 4,113 new cases. Thus far, 733,062 patients have recuperated from the disease.
