ISLAMABAD: Pakistan today (Wednesday) has called upon the international community to work together to “mitigate” the simmering Rohingya crisis.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri expressed grief over the deaths of more than a dozen Rohingya refugees after a massive fire swept through a shelter camp in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar earlier this week.
“We are saddened by massive fire in Rohingya camp at Cox’s Bazar resulting in deaths and destruction. Our thoughts are with victims & their families,” the Foreign Office said in a tweet.
“The incident is a sad reminder of continued sufferings of Rohingya Muslims,” it added. The FO urged upon the international community to work together to mitigate the Rohingya crisis.
According to an international news agency, at least 15 people were killed in a massive fire that ripped through a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, while at least 400 remain missing, the U.N. refugee agency said on Tuesday.
A field hospital built by Turkey in the refugee camp also became inoperable due to the massive fire. The crowded camp currently houses 1.2 million Rohingya, most of whom have fled a crackdown by the Myanmar military in 2017.
The fire incident came at a time when there is growing frustration among Rohingya refugees over the Bangladesh government’s attempt to relocate them to a remote island in the Bay of Bengal.
