ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has expressed strong solidarity with the people of Turkey in the wake of a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake that shook Izmir city and the periphery along the Turkish coast.
Foreign Office, in a tweet, said, “Extremely anguished by news of earthquake in Izmir, Turkey and people reportedly trapped in demolished buildings. Like always, people of Pakistan are in strong solidarity with their Turkish brethren.”

The FO spokesperson in his tweet bade best wishes and prayers to Turkish people specifically tagging in his post his counterpart for Turkey.
Earlier in the day, a powerful earthquake of a magnitude of around 7.0 rocked Aegean Sea, jolting western Turkey and Greece. Turkey’s Health Minister Fahrettin Koca informed that four people were killed in Izmir and 120 were injured.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) put the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.6, while the United States Geological Survey said it was 7.0.
The epicentre was some 17 kilometres off the coast of the Izmir province, at a depth of 16 km, AFAD said. The US Geological Survey said the depth was 10 km and that the epicentre was 33.5km off Turkey’s coast.
