DHAKA: Bangladesh has executed a military captain, killer of the country’s founding father Mujibur Rahman, 45 years after the assassination.
Inspector General of Prisons Brigade General AKM Mustafa Kamal Pasha said that Abdul Majed – former military captain – was hanged at the central jail at Keraniganj near the capital, Dhaka. He said, “He was hanged to death at 12.01 am on Sunday.”
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan informed that Abdul Majed was arrested in Dhaka on Tuesday, adding that the arrest was the biggest gift for Bangladesh this year.
In 1998 Abdul Majed was sentenced in absentia to death along with a dozen other army officers over the murders.
Abdul Majed publicly announced his involvement in the assassination and was reportedly hiding in India for many years. He returned to Bangladesh last month.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – father of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina – was killed along with most of his family in a military coup on August 15, 1975, nearly four years after he led Bangladesh to independence.
