The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an increase of Rs2.52 per unit in electricity prices for consumers across the country.

According to a NEPRA statement, the CPPA has sought the increase under the July fuel price adjustment. The request says that electricity generated from imported LNG in July cost Rs47.37 per unit.

The CPPA said 10.78% of total electricity was generated from LNG, costing Rs77.19 billion, while 1.42% was produced using furnace oil at a cost of Rs10.77 billion.

According to the request, 39.81% of electricity was generated from hydropower, 10.91% from local coal, 14.38% from imported coal and 10.10% from nuclear sources.

The fuel cost of nuclear-generated electricity stood at Rs3.02 per unit.

The request further said that 31 million units of electricity were generated from diesel in July, with the cost reaching Rs54.47 per unit.

NEPRA said a hearing on the CPPA’s request will be held on August 27. If approved, the proposed adjustment would place an additional burden of Rs41 billion, including GST, on consumers.
