The Punjab government has announced the launch of a subsidized e-bike program, offering 100,000 electric motorcycles to students through interest-free installments as part of its drive to promote affordable and environmentally friendly transportation.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a key meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department, where officials presented detailed briefings on the promotion of environmentally friendly transport across the province, including electric buses, e-taxis, e-bikes, e-three-wheelers, mass transit projects, and the electric vehicle manufacturing industry.
The meeting announced what the government described as Punjab’s largest-ever green transport initiative, under which more electric buses, e-taxis, e-bikes, and e-three-wheelers will be introduced simultaneously. Over the next five years, 5,000 electric buses will be deployed across the province.
Officials said Punjab has also achieved a major milestone by establishing an electric bus manufacturing industry, attributing the development to the provincial government’s business-friendly policies.
The chief minister also decided to relaunch the e-bike scheme for students, under which 100,000 electric bikes will be distributed within a year.
The Punjab government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 on each e-bike. Male students will be required to make a down payment of Rs14,000 and will repay the remaining amount through interest-free monthly installments of Rs2,100.
Announcing additional relief for female students, Maryam Nawaz said the provincial government will bear both the down payment and registration fee for their e-bikes.
Female students will only have to pay the interest-free monthly installment of Rs2,100. Punjab government employees will also be eligible to obtain e-bikes through easy installment plans.
Under the first phase of the public transport expansion, 1,500 buses will be introduced across 91 tehsils in the Gujranwala, Gujrat, Rawalpindi, Multan, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Faisalabad, and Sargodha divisions.
