Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has announced the establishment of an “Aquaculture Park” at Korangi Fish Harbor, aimed at promoting Pakistan’s blue economy.
According to details, the announcement was made during a meeting held in Karachi under the chairmanship of the federal minister.
The session focused on advancing the blue economy and was attended by representatives from Gwadar Port, Korangi Fish Harbor, Marine Fisheries, and the Balochistan Chamber of Commerce. During the meeting, the minister announced that a 120-acre Aquaculture Park will be developed in Karachi at a cost of PKR 3 billion.
He said that the project will be executed through a public-private partnership and is expected to boost the export of marine-based food products.
Junaid Anwar Chaudhry emphasized that investment in aquaculture and port infrastructure is essential for national development, noting that Pakistan’s coastal waters are highly suitable for aquaculture. He added that after Karachi, the same aquaculture model will be implemented in Balochistan as well. In this regard, he directed the Korangi Fish Harbor Authority to submit a detailed report within 10 days.
The federal minister also announced the relocation of the Marine Fisheries Department’s sub-office to the Gwadar Port Authority, stating that the move will improve institutional coordination and expedite decision-making.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs has announced an immediate 50 percent reduction in port, wharfage, and storage charges for dry bulk export cargo at the Karachi Port Trust (KPT). The ministry has also deferred the previously scheduled 5 percent annual hike in these charges.
