And Cammie walks again almost a year later, thanks to the prosthetic leg, following a barbaric act which shocked Pakistan, a country where animal cruelty is an everyday thing.
Last June, a local landlord in Sindh’s Sanghar district allegedly chopped off the leg of an eight-month-old female camel, later named Cammie. Her cries echoed on social media for several days, which paved the way for her being moved to a shelter in Karachi and taken care of.

The shelter staff provided both medical care and emotional support to Cammie, helping her heal and adapt to life with a prosthetic leg. The artificial limb was arranged through a collaboration between a pet prosthetic company and Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS), ensuring she could walk again after her traumatic injury.

Animal cruelty remains a widespread issue in Pakistan, where legal protections for animals are minimal and rarely enforced. From abuse of working animals to violent attacks on strays, countless cases go unnoticed or unpunished. Activists continue to call for stricter laws, public awareness, and dedicated shelters to combat this ongoing crisis.
