The missile attacks by Iran have caused scenes of devastation in Israel in response to the war initiated by Israel on June 13.
As a result of Iran’s missile strikes, numerous buildings in Israel have been reduced to rubble, with 24 Israelis killed and hundreds injured. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is at the forefront of these attacks, but do you know what this group is and how powerful it is?
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is one of the most powerful and influential organizations in Iran. It has its own ground, naval, and air forces. The IRGC was established in 1979 after the Iranian Revolution to defend the new Islamic system. Since then, the group has functioned as an alternative military force alongside Iran’s regular army.
The IRGC has 190,000 guards and 610,000 active personnel. It oversees Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs and is also responsible for internal security. The IRGC is accountable not to the Iranian government or president but to the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.
Over time, the organization’s influence in Iran’s politics and economy has grown. Today, the group provides money, weapons, training, advice, and technology to allied governments and proxy groups.
The IRGC supplies weapons, funds, and training to armed groups in the Middle East, such as Hezbollah, militias in Iraq, and forces loyal to the Syrian government. The organization also leads a unit called the Quds Force, which maintains relations with armed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah outside Iran.
After the 2000s, wars in Iraq and Syria further increased the group’s strength, but the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria weakened both Iran and the IRGC.
