Over 1.1 million animals were sold across 292 cattle markets set up in Punjab ahead of Eidul Adha.
According to figures released by the Local Government Department, a total of 1.5 million animals had been brought to these markets across nine divisions.
Punjab—the country’s largest province—hosted 292 markets, which received approximately 1.5 million animals. Of these, more than 1.1 million were sold.
According to the department’s data, in Lahore alone, 443,000 small animals and 222,000 large animals were sold.
In Faisalabad, 112,000 animals were brought to the markets, with 88,000 sold. Similarly, in Rawalpindi, 84,000 animals were brought in, of which 46,000 were sold.
The Secretary of the Local Government Department stated that high-quality facilities were provided to the public on a no-profit, no-loss basis.
Meanwhile in Karachi, over 150,000 sacrificial animals have been sold as soaring prices in the port city have driven away folks who typically offer cows or goats during Eid al-Adha.
Traders have expressed concern, saying that Karachi residents have not purchased animals in expected numbers this year and that even their basic expenses have not been covered. On the other hand, citizens complain that animals worth Rs. 300,000 are being priced at Rs. 600,000. This year, there are more animals than buyers.
