A U.S. court has sentenced Pakistani businessman Muhammad Asif Hafeez to 16 years in prison for drug trafficking.
According to international media reports, the court convicted Muhammad Asif Hafeez on two charges. He was arrested in London in August 2017 and extradited to the United States three years ago.
The time Hafeez has already spent in custody will be credited toward his sentence, which is set to conclude in 2033.
The U.S. court also ordered the confiscation of assets linked to Hafeez’s drug trafficking activities.
On November 18, 2024, Asif Hafeez pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to manufacture, distribute, and illegally import heroin into the United States, as well as one count of conspiracy to manufacture, distribute, and unlawfully import methamphetamine and marijuana into the country. His legal counsel said that he was compelled to enter the plea due to the severe conditions of his detention in the United States.
