The Ministry of Power Division has rejected circulating reports of a ban on the installation of two electricity meters, terming them false and misleading.
On June 3, it was reported that in an effort to control the abuse of government electricity subsidies, the Ministry of Energy Power Division had banned the connection of over a single-phase electricity meter per household.
According to the spokesperson of the Power Division, the news spreading on social media is entirely fabricated and deceptive, aimed at causing unnecessary public concern. The spokesperson added that spreading or sharing false news is a punishable offense under the PECA Act.
The Power Division clarified that a second electricity meter can be obtained at any residential premises in accordance with prevailing regulations. Citizens are urged not to pay attention to such baseless rumors.
As per the NEPRA Consumer Services Manual 2021, a separate meter is permitted in residential areas that constitute independent portions with separate entrances and kitchens.
It was also emphasized that laws to prevent electricity misuse and wrongful subsidy claims already exist and continue to be fully enforced.
