In Karachi’s North Karachi area near Powerhouse Chowrangi, a motorcyclist was injured after being hit by a dumper, following which an enraged mob set several dumpers on fire, as reported by national media.
According to a report on Thursday, an eyewitness to the incident at North Karachi’s Powerhouse Chowrangi stated that the dumper driver was a 17 or 18-year-old boy who was racing.
The eyewitness said that people stopped the racing dumper driver and beat him. In an attempt to flee, the driver drove the dumper over motorcycles, destroying two of them, but there were no fatalities.
However, one motorcyclist was injured. According to the police, enraged individuals set fire to 9 vehicles near Powerhouse Chowrangi and Four K Chowrangi.
The police said that the damaged vehicles included 5 dumpers and 4 water tankers. According to police, all five dumpers were set ablaze at Powerhouse Chowrangi, three water tankers at Four K Chowrangi, and one at Surjani Baba Mor by the angry crowd. However, the fires on all vehicles were later extinguished.
Police stated that they are gathering accident-related information from all hospitals in Karachi. Liaquat Mehsud, a leader of the Dumper Association, claimed while speaking to the media at Powerhouse Chowrangi that 11 of his vehicles were set on fire.
He said that if someone was injured in the incident, they should be presented; those who set the dumpers on fire should be arrested and the government should provide protection.
Meanwhile, in protest against the burning of dumpers at Powerhouse Chowrangi, demonstrations were held on Super Highway, where dumper drivers dumped garbage near Sohrab Goth’s Al-Asif Square.
Garbage was dumped from multiple dumpers near Sohrab Goth, disrupting traffic flow. A late-night crackdown was carried out to arrest those involved in setting dumpers on fire in Karachi, during which several individuals were arrested.
The spokesperson for SSP Central stated that the suspects are being identified through CCTV and video footage. Roads toward Powerhouse are open and traffic is flowing. A heavy police presence is on-site, and those attempting to sabotage law and order will not be spared.
