To combat escalating traffic congestion and rising fatal accidents in the city, authorities have announced a phased ban on Qingqi rickshaws, beginning with restrictions on major thoroughfares.
As outlined in the newly approved Traffic and Road Safety regulations—finalized in a meeting chaired by the inspector general of police—Qingqi rickshaws are now barred from operating on five key routes. These include:
- Shaheen Complex to Tower via II Chundrigar Road
- Metropole Intersection to Star Gate on Sharea Faisal
- Lily Intersection to Submarine Underpass on Khaliq uz Zaman Road
- Sir Shah Suleman Road, Liaquatabad No. 10 (Gharibabad) to National Stadium
- Drigh Road to Sohrab Goth on Rashid Minhas Road
This decision follows mounting concerns over worsening traffic conditions and a sharp rise in road accident fatalities.
Meanwhile, the updated traffic regulations impose stricter rules for transport operators, motorcyclists, and Qingqi rickshaw drivers. A targeted crackdown is set to be launched against water-spilling tankers and motorcyclists failing to wear helmets.
Moreover, motorcycle riders must ensure that their headlights, tail lights, and indicators are properly maintained, while vehicle registration plates must be clearly visible on both sides. Riders are also required to use rearview mirrors and carry valid driving licenses at all times.
